I am now two months in to this journey and I don’t feel like I am going to die when I run three miles. Now what? It can be lonely and boring if you try to do this all by yourself. This is a tricky spot on the road. Another spot where you can wander off track. But if you have someone with you and experiencing the same things as you, well, it can be a bit more interesting and a lot more fun!
My original experience with group runs was with a group of work friends in 2000 and 2001. They helped me go beyond a 10k and got me to the 2001 Salem Lake Trail Run 30k, It was awesome and I was stoked and about ready to register for the Myrtle Beach Marathon when disaster struck. A hiking injury took me out of running for several months and then I got lazy and stopped running. Eighteen months later I finally decided it was time to get back on track. My group of long distance running friends had drifted away, so I decided to check out this organization called Team in Training (TNT), which is a fundraising group for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Best running decision EVAH! I have met my closest friends in life through TNT. And they have all helped me in some way to complete my 13 marathons. And the genesis of my company, Junction 311 Endurance Sports, was inspired by TNT. My favorite race to direct, Hit the Brixx, is still a 100% fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Back to now. I am excited to be a part of Fleet Feet Greensboro’s Streakers Training program. We are in our second week and I am already feeling the fun and camaraderie that I did with TNT. Coach Jen Goff has put together a great plan for me and I am looking forward to the next few months with all of my new Streaker friends!
As always, Cool Running.
